What Is a Parlay?

A parlay combines multiple bets into one ticket. Every leg has to win. If even one loses, the whole thing goes down. That's the deal — you trade safety for a much bigger payout.

Some people call them accumulators or combo bets. Same thing. The math is the same whether you're in Vegas or on your phone.

How Parlay Odds Actually Work

Parlay odds multiply the decimal odds of each leg together. That's it. No magic.

But first you need to convert American odds to decimal:

• Negative odds: Decimal = 1 + (100 ÷ |odds|)
• Positive odds: Decimal = 1 + (odds ÷ 100)

So -110 becomes 1.909. +150 becomes 2.50. You get the idea.

Multiply the decimals, multiply by your stake, and you've got your payout. Here's a concrete example:

• Leg 1: Chiefs -3 (-110) → Decimal: 1.909
• Leg 2: Lakers -5.5 (-110) → Decimal: 1.909
• Combined: 1.909 × 1.909 = 3.644
• $100 bet → $364.40 back (including your $100)

True Probability vs. What the Sportsbook Shows

Here's where most people get fooled. Sportsbooks bake a margin (the vig) into parlay odds. The payout they offer is slightly worse than the true odds.

For a 2-leg parlay at -110 each, the sportsbook pays you as if the true odds are +264. But the real odds are closer to +275. That 11-cent gap? That's the house edge.

Six-leg parlays sound exciting. But you're looking at roughly a 2% chance. That's lottery territory, not betting strategy.

When Parlays Make Sense

I'll be honest — most sharp bettors avoid parlays. The juice is stacked against you, and the more legs you add, the worse it gets. But there are spots where parlays work:

• Correlated parlays: If you like the Chiefs -3, you probably also like the Over. Those two outcomes are connected, which changes the math in your favor.
• Small stakes for fun: A $5 4-legger that could pay $60? That's entertainment, and there's nothing wrong with that.
• Same-game parlays: These use different math since the legs aren't independent. Some sportsbooks price them better than others.

When to Avoid Parlays

• Chasing losses: Stacking legs after a bad day is how bankrolls die.
• Serious bankroll management: If you're trying to build long-term profit, parlays work against you.
• 5+ legs: The math just doesn't work. The vig compounds with every leg.

Pro Tips for Smarter Parlays

1. Keep it to 2-3 legs. Anything more and the house edge eats you alive.
2. Hunt for correlated lines. Team + over, or star player + team spread. The correlation gives you a tiny edge.
3. Track your parlay ROI separately. Don't mix parlay wins with straight bet results. They're different games.
4. Shop for the best parlay odds. Some books offer better parlay pricing than others. The difference is small per bet but compounds over hundreds.

What happens if one leg pushes?

If one leg ties, it gets removed. A 4-team parlay becomes a 3-team parlay with adjusted odds. Your payout drops, but you're still alive.

Can I parlay player props?

Yes. Most sportsbooks let you parlay props, totals, and spreads. Same-game parlays combining props are the most popular format right now.

What's the max parlay payout?

Depends on the sportsbook. Most cap somewhere between $100,000 and $500,000. If you're hitting 10-leggers regularly, you've got bigger things to worry about than payout caps.
